Last night the HL team was blown away by the creative talent at the inaugural South African Interior Designer of the Year Awards in Kramerville, Joburg. The awards, which were sponsored by The Fabric Library in association with House and Leisure and IID, celebrated local design talent on all levels, from corporate to retail and residential, and even included a student category. Stephen Falcke, who was fresh off a plane from London, handed out the awards, and inspired the audience with words of encouragement from international colleagues, who had told him South African design was some of the best they had seen. Looking around the room, we had to agree, and although we were all sipping French champagne and munching on multi-coloured macaroons, we left with a fuzzy feeling of being Proudly South African. And the winners are: The SA Interior Designer of the Year Award: Silvio Rech of Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens Architecture, for Dalrymple Pavilion and Randlords, both in Gauteng. The SA Interior Decorator of the Year Award: Tracy Lynch, for Brite Blue’s offices and Old Mac Daddy Trailer Hotel, both Western Cape. The Design Excellence and Innovation Award: Douw de Kock for Live Music, Western Cape. The Emerging Designer of the Year Award: Sinegugu Sosibo, from the Durban University of Technology, for Trifecta. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to By Invite Only for organising such a successful awards event.
