It opened in June 2011 with a defining Art and Artists of the Eastern Cape exhibition and looks set to be the city’s arts, culture and heritage hub. 041-501-8318 Best Gelato Werner Lourens of Starburst Deli in Central does theatrical, made-to-order gelato and will even serve it in a bowl made of ice. A chocolatier and speciality cake designer, his Death by Chocolate and gluten-free Lindt Amarula cakes are legendary. He also makes croissants and Belgian waffles from scratch. 072-281-5312, starburstdeli.co.za Best Custom-Made Shoes Monique Coetzee of Le Qin Custom Designs creates wildly elaborate, show-stopping shoes that are now making their way to Vienna. Her small factory in Newton Park also makes shoes and clothing for upcoming and established labels. 041-364-1033 Best Period Pieces Tony’s Antiques in Walmer is one of the oldest antique shops in SA, having opened in the mid-1950s. Owner Olaf Haitink has the best selection of authentic Georgian, Victorian and period pieces in town. 041-581-1618 Best Lunch with a View The Algoa Bay Yacht Club’s Chartroom Restaurant at Dom Pedro Jetty in PE Harbour is twice as nice nowadays with twins Nic and Jonathan Gunston at the helm. Expect excellent prawns, pizzas and fresh fish caught every morning, and an outside deck that’s heaven in summer. 041-585-2893, abyc.org.za Best Township Hang-out Jeyas Jazz Corner in New Brighton is the trendiest township shebeen by far for lively jazz and socialising, and always has a great ekasi vibe. 041-454-7567 Best for Vintage Finds Carmen Sporke stocks vintage clothing, shoes and accessories such as quirky corsages at Decorlicious in Central. She travels across the Eastern Cape sourcing unusual items, which are reasonably priced and spotless before going on display. 083-238-5070, decor-licious.co.za Best Dry-Cured Bacon Twins Andrew and Craig Broughton, from Leicester in the UK, call themselves The 2 Fat Butchers. Their deli-butchery in Walmer stocks classic English fare, such as Cumberland sausages, and the brothers make traditional pork pies and dry-cured, smoked bacon, which is served in some of the city’s top eateries. 041-581-0469 Best Serrano Ham Hanson’s Too in Walmer is run by the bubbly Shelley Hanson. The tiny deli has great ciabatta, Serrano ham from Spain and hard-to-find (in PE at any rate) ingredients like rabbit and foie gras. 041-581-1970 Best Cooking Classes German master baker, chocolatier and chef Ralph Gottschalk does confectionery, baking and cooking courses for adults and kids at The Pastryworks studio in Fernglen. He also has a shop across the road for artisan breads and pastries. 041-364-3377, thepastryworks.co.za Best for Classy Cocktails Shhugar Restro-Lounge in Walmer is a soulful spot in a sophisticated yet low-key setting. It’s especially cosy in winter when the fireplaces are ablaze. Glam owner Tammy van der Hoogen is a former international model and was closely involved in restoring the property, which was built in the early 1900s. 041-581-1475 Best Whimsical Gifts Sophie Blue in Central stocks Cath Kidston prints, Julia Baillie linen, Hunter wellies, imported Claus Porto soaps and more. Owner Marlene Nepgen also sells children’s clothing at Sophie Blue Petite in Walmer Park Shopping Centre. sophieblue.co.za Best Brandy Selection Preston’s in Walmer has a range of nearly 40 pot-still brandies from both SA and abroad, including the internationally lauded Joseph Barry Ten from Barrydale. It also has fabulous estate wines thanks to owner Nico Pitsiladi’s support of the annual Nederburg Auction. 041-581-1993 Best Kids’ Decor Tjelke Klatte does European-inspired ‘quirky and non-commercial’ clothing, gifts and decor for tots at Oliver.K in Walmer. There’s also a small range of adult clothing. 041-581-0335 Best Cinema Treat Summerstrand boutique hotel Shamwari Townhouse includes the Mountbatten Theatre. John matures his own meat, preparing each order.
