Oh Dear Megan may be a relatively new name on the jewellery design circuit, but it’s already hot off the lips of Cape Town’s stylish elite. Megan Fogarty’s recent summer collection is all about edgy, geometric piping designs, her signature range of threaded and warped antique coins, careful attention to detail and beautiful craftsmanship. We chatted to the young jewellery maker about her dreams, loves and summer launches, and here’s what she had to say. Tell us a bit about your new summer 2011 collection – what inspired you? I think the inspiration comes from the excitement of our pending summer… The wonderful way that the smells and sounds of summer make you feel. I wanted these pieces to reflect that, to be bright, breezy and put a smile on your face. What trends should we be on the look-out for this season? Definitely metallics (clothing and accessories) and colour blocking. Think bright dresses with chunky jewellery. Which local designers are you swooning over? So many… I really feel like there are so many exciting things happening in the fashion and design industry at the moment. I am in love with Dear Dorothy’s ss 2011/2012 range. Her dresses are so amazing and I need to get my hands on one or two! Your biggest career highlight to date? That’s a difficult one… I feel as if I have been fortunate enough to have had a few. I have met so many amazing people and have had the opportunity to do some wonderful collaborations. If I had to choose it would most probably the Design Indaba this year… It was phenomenal to interact and see people’s reactions to my work. What’s your signature seasonal must-have item? Definitely an Oh Dear Megan geometric necklace… I would wear it with something soft and feminine to mix things up a bit. How would you describe your jewellery in 3 words? Proudly South African Any future collaborations in the pipeline? Not currently… I have a week left of my degree so at the moment I am focusing on that… well trying to anyway! But as soon as I’m done I would love to work with local design labels Selfi and Vamp. What’s on your Christmas wishlist? A great big studio with lots of wine in the fridge, a creative space where everyone is always welcome! Oh, and perhaps a gorgeous man (shirtless… of course) to serve me coffee. Advice for aspiring designers? Not everyone is going to like what you are doing. Taste is personal, but it’s important to preserve and trust your instincts. Be prepared for some late nights. Most importantly, learn to laugh at yourself… We all make mistakes sometimes. For more information on Oh Dear Megan’s new range check out her blog or drop her a mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
