HL's Decor Editor Jeanne Botes attended Marcel Wanders' debut exhibition of the Mermaids photographic artworks which launched on 19 September 2011, as part of this year's London Design Festival. The launch included a breakfast attended by several industry insiders and a mix of magazine personalities. The impressive exhibition was held at The White Building, Moooi’s West London Showroom. A dazzling mirage of blue and white lighting, soft textures and a collection of Moooi designs, the display resembled an underwater seascape unlike any other. The talented Marcel Wanders had the following to say about the concept behind his exhibition, 'To be submerged into water is to be in a place free from the constraints of gravity, free to explore a multi-dimensional universe. Here, like Atlantis, the world of Moooi is enveloped in water, fit for discovery. I invite you to join the mermaids in this alternative state of being'. The installation features piles of furniture from Moooi – supposedly shipwrecked – against a background of powerful underwater photographs. Some of the products on display include the nifty Mistral (lamp and ventilator) by Moooi Works, the elegant Woood desk by Marcel Wanders, the medieval-inspired Gothic Chair by Studio Job, the Extension Chair by Sjoerd Vroonland and the Position Lamp by ROOMS. These objects were beautifully complemented by soothing lighting and an ocean soundscape by London studio Creatmosphere. Moooi never disappoints with their striking, innovative exhibitions and this one was no different. For more information about the talented designer you can visit marcelwanders.com.
