Malva Pop-Up Store

There is a new pop-up design store in Durban town and it’s packed to the rafters with fabulous finds to adorn every space in your home. Malva is the brainchild of Durban native Lauren Wallett who started the concept in Joburg and has now transported it to her hometown. 'Malva showcases different forms of design talent. From household goodies to art and novelties, there is something here for everyone,' says Lauren. 'I want the space to have a theatrical feel where patrons can experience more than just the retail side of the store. This pop-up store is a co-op and includes the finds I include under the Malva label as well as a selection of Durban designers’ creations.' She has invited artist Terry Angelos to be part of the co-op and Terry's current exhibition certainly gives the space the theatrical feel Lauren is hoping to achieve. The works are centred around the concept of Victorian curiosity cabinets and found items which have been transformed into beautiful, emotive tableaux such as a little glass bird nestled at the bottom of a light fitting, created from a Consol glass jar and entitled 'Captured.' Imaginative and whimsical, the exhibition also includes Terry's drawings and paintings, which have garnered her a large following in Durban. Another member of the co-op is Natasha Deary of The Shack. Their beautiful wooden items such as CD holders and coat hooks are bang on trend for this season. 'I would eventually like to move towards having live theatrical performances here as well,' says Lauren, 'but, for now, I like to encourage people to come and relax with a cup of coffee or a delicious meal from Spiga d’Oro and just make themselves at home at Malva.' 'I believe that if I stock my shop with quirky, fun items that I love, others will love them, too,' Lauren maintains. The Malva Pop-Up is behind Spiga d’Oro, 200 Florida Road, Morningside, and you can contact Lauren on 084-308-2024, via ilovemalva.com or follow her on twitter (@laurenwallett) for Malva news.
