Jonathan Cane Q&A

With the 2012 House and Leisure Food issue hitting the shelves last week, we chatted to some of the personalities behind the dazzling dishes. We recently put a couple of questions to one of our local, multi-talented cooks, Jonathan Cane, who is also famed for his food design experiment with fellow foodie Kathryn White, titled Mess. What food trends do you think will be big in 2012? Lots of beans! It’s the only thing I’m really certain about for 2012. I think that the focus on beans indicates a need for food that’s simple, sustaining and affordable. Which fellow local chefs do you admire? My friend Neil Roake (Freedom Café & Craft Trattoria). I think his authentic, robust approach to food is how I like to cook – only he does it much better. Favourite foodie blog? Another damned food blog is really funny and explains why I think ‘foodie’ is a silly word. The one dish that you think screams ‘summer’? Anything with beans. Staple food item on a desert island? Pizza. If not, then coconut. If I weren’t a chef, I would be… I’m not really a chef; I’m a cook. If I were a chef I would want to be an engineer and do something difficult and useful.
