HOUSE #9 – Roof with a View

Styling Leana Schoeman, Heather Boting Photographs Elsa Young Original text Danielle Weakley WHEN October 2011 ISSUE Indoor/outdoor WHERE City, Johannesburg WHAT A two-storey dwelling in Jozi’s best-kept secret, the inner city, created from the conversion of two separate 1970s units. Architect Charles Jackson guided the renovations, which involved gutting the existing structure and constructing a brand-new modern space. On the lower level are two en-suite bedrooms and a lounge; a sleekly modern kitchen, dining room, guest suite and ‘all-important wraparound roof deck’ occupy the upper level. Maximising the 270-degree views are retractable glass shutter doors that open to a potted garden, braai, outside shower and pool. Despite its lofty position, the penthouse offers a unique connection to the city below. The owners appreciate the sense of perspective: ‘You can see around you and where you fit into the grid.’ WHO John Clark and Alicia Thompson BY Charles Jackson Architects, If this home is your favourite, vote for it now and stand a chance to win home appliances from Siemens to the value of R30 000!
