Hiring an Interior Designer

One of Durban’s young, up-and-coming interior design talents, Bronwyn Hill, answered our questions about the process of interior design. If you are one of those people who is interested in hiring an interior designer but feel intimidated about how it works, this is for you. What is your design philosophy? I am all about the balance between function and aesthetics. If a space functions well, it makes the soft furnishings and the décor so much easier to get right. What is your ideal space? I enjoy, cool, calm and collected spaces where function and aesthetics work hand in hand to create a space that is welcoming and comfortable, where one can relax and rejuvenate - a space that is uncluttered and does not fight for one’s attention. Some of the key projects you’ve worked on? I love residential projects, they are what make me tick as a designer and I have had the some amazing clients and formed some great relationships but some of the best projects I have been involved in have involved kids’ spaces and I take great pleasure in being a kid again. I have recently completed the design and revamp of the Entabeni Hospital Paedatric Ward which was great fun to work on! What services does an interior designer/decorator offer? All companies will offer a slightly different service. At BHD Interiors, I offer a range of services from special planning and project management for new or existing spaces right the way through to thes election and installation of soft furnishings. What advice would you give to someone who is interested in hiring a designer but feeling a bit anxious about the process? Go for it! There is a whole world of possibilities out there and with the help of a designer, the dream you have for your space can be realised. Does a designer expect to work on a whole house or could you just do a room or two? It depends solely on the designer. At BHD, we take on big and small projects from residential to commercial. How would a client describe what they want to you? I like to look at the ideas a client has. Most clients have pictures of things they love, which I like to have a look at. The best way to get an idea of what you as a client want and need is to look at each room and make a list of the must haves, the things you would like to have and things you really don’t want which helps the designer to meet your brief and to give you the space you that you want. When you hire an interior designer will they immediately want to change all your furniture and fixtures or can you keep some of the things you love? If there are items that you love and work with the overall idea we have for the space, I am happy to incorporate them into the new design. We may need to give them a face lift but I will always do what I can to keep those special items. Why would you recommend that someone hire an interior designer? Designers are equipped with the skills to not only make your space look amazing, but to make it function according to your needs. If you are going to the big expense of changing your home or office do it with the peace of mind that you are doing it right! Does the interior designer choose everything or can the owner have some input? I like to work with my clients and there are often items they come across that they fall in love with and really want to use so if we can make it work, we will. Bronwyn owns BHD Interiors.
