Free Range Interiors and Clothing

Caroline Carlisle’s Free Range Interiors and Clothing is a gorgeous addition to the expansion at Piggly Wiggly in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. ‘The name Free Range may have something to do with the fact that we are chicken farmers,’ explains Caroline with a smile, 'but it also suggests a space which is clean and fresh.’ ‘I was aiming to capture the Midlands vibe without being too country,’ says Caroline and she has certainly achieved this with Free Range’s mix of traditional and modern pieces. The store is housed in a free-standing building with windows on all sides which coupled with the grey walls and concrete floor creates a light, airy feel and the perfect backdrop to the items on display. The store is stocked with unique pieces which Caroline sources locally in KZN and throughout South Africa with the aim of offering something a little bit different to her customers. Tessa Proudfoot, Caroline’s aunt, has supplied linens and her expertise and Caroline has collaborated with Hedgerow Clothing on her own designs. ‘Free Range clothing consists of classic basics. We use only good quality fabrics such as 100% linen to create items which will last.’ The store is beautifully appointed to show off decorative art by Tammy Quinn, items by Amatuli and Highthorn’s spectacular leather and crystal chandelier and a variety of other decor items, furniture and objets.  Free Range is at Piggly Wiggly on the R103 in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, 082-804-7949.  Text and images: Candice Botha
