Food Wine Design Fair 2011

Now in its second year, Joburg’s Food Wine Design Fair is once again set to be the go-to place for lifestyle and holiday inspiration. Pop over to the Hyde Park Shopping Centre from 25-27 November and meet the HL team at our Goet-designed stand, where highly acclaimed, now Johannesburg-based chef, David Higgs will be cooking up a storm. David will be preparing delectable morsels especially for HL readers, who can look forward to a free copy of our latest issue with each dish! As can be expected, the fair boasts a proud selection of local offerings. Among the 25 wine exhibitors will be prominent local labels such as Tokara and Meerlust who will showcase their wares alongside those from boutique farms such as Kleinood and Creation. But expect more than just regular tastings. Creation, for example, has teamed up with Sel et Poivre chef Coco Reinarhz to create pairings for its flagship wines. Joining the vino stands is an array of specialist spirits and beers too, such as the organic range from Jorgensen’s Distillery, vodka from Grey Goose, as well as beers and ales from &Union and Shongweni Brewery. Other stellar offerings include Bar Bar Black Sheep, the Riebeek- Kasteel restaurant known for its slow-cooked country fare, which will serve up tasty dishes, from deep-fried courgette flowers to sardines on toast. Expect to leave armed with local delights such as soft goats cheeses from Pépé Charlot and sustainably grown produce from Fresh Earth. Also worth checking out are the cordials, extracts, preserves and other products from Kuhestan Organic Farm, artisanal French charcuterie from Petit Cochon, olive oils from Chaloner and the vast array of vanilla products from the Vanilla Man. This year the design segment will be more focused and more thought provoking, explains Ross Douglas, of organisers, ArtLogic. ‘We decided to give fewer, but bigger stands to our designers so that visitors can engage with them more intimately.’ A perfect example is Koop Design’s special project space, where architect and Koop founder Richard Stretton will talk sustainability in an open and conversational forum.
