Durban's Wonder Market

Markets are becoming an increasingly popular phenomenon throughout South Africa and Durban’s crafters and creatives are leading the movement at several successful markets in the city, the newest of which is the Wonder Market. Held at Chris Saunders Park near Gateway on the first Sunday of every month, the Wonder Market promises ‘food, craft and treasure’ and certainly delivers with stalls selling fresh local produce, hand-crafted jewellery, homeware and clothing and vintage finds to delight all. Each month a charity stall is invited to join the market and the KZN Society for the Blind will be at the March event with their intricately woven baskets. Other regular stalls include Mint with their retired goods, Starbright Girl’s unique jewellery designs, beautiful bunches of flowers from Elizabeth’s Florist and a feast of flavour from the food stalls like Tasha’s Fantastic Fudge and Mamma Luciana’s Deli. The park makes for an extremely pleasant setting with trees and beautiful flower beds adding to the colours and scents of the stalls. Tables are set up near the food stalls and the George Mani Jazz Band and DJ Mr Spaghetti add to the relaxed Sunday-afternoon vibe – perfect for treating yourself to a Sunday lunch of delicious local produce.
