Durban Food Market

The words ‘local’ and ‘seasonal’ are thrown around with ease in the kitchens of famous chefs and amateur foodies alike but most of us ordinary folk find it tricky to source produce which fits these criteria. Lucky for us in Durban, though, we have the monthly Food Market to indulge in culinary delights which are all in season and produced in Kwa Zulu Natal. The brainchild of well-known Durban restaurateur Nick Papadopoulos, chef Eric Edwards, PR guru Emma Dunk and marketing expert Karen Brokensha, The Food Market has grown from strength to strength since its first trading in September 2009 to an award-winning champion of local farmers and foodies. Held at the Hellenic Hall on the last Saturday of every month, The Food Market is a treasure trove of delicious delights. Freshly baked bread is piled high alongside a mountain of colourful fresh fruit and vegetables and for those with a sweet tooth, there’ll be no choice but to give up the diet for the day as you’ll pass chocolates, pastries and confectionery such as nougat and fudge galore. There are unusual ingredients like truffle oil and duck eggs as well as firm favourite nibbles such as pies and pates and you will be tempted to taste many of the ready-to-eat items on offer, so come hungry. The Hellenic Community Centre is at 6 High Grove, Umgeni Park, Durban North and The Food Market is held on the last Saturday of the month from 9am-2pm.
