Artist Focus: Samantha Brown

Samantha Brown is an accomplished painter; with a background in fine art spanning 10 years and with an impressive registry of exhibitions, she is the hot name to drop. Leaving the film industry to shadow a full time affair with painting, she began with murals and colour washes in restaurants and private homes in addition to commissioned portraits and replicas of old masters. Having gained experience with international scenic artists, she turned her attention to paint effects and the chemistry behind various finishes. This textural experiment invariably led her to levitate between both figurative and abstract modes of expression. Operating from a converted warren of artisan activity in an old house in Woodstock, Samantha is inspired by the neighbourhood’s polarities – the mix of Victorian edifices that shelter residential vagrants and the youthful currency from the district’s burgeoning design scene. With a love for simple forms, large scales and vivid colours, Samantha is a disciple of the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, an enthusiast of Gaudi’s architecture, and appreciative of the sensitivities of local artist Francois Irvine. Best known for her Kimono Series she has sold pieces to collectors from Amsterdam, Switzerland, New York, Sydney and Spain. She exhibits her works in a series of local galleries including the Lisa King Gallery, The Red Gallery, Hout Bay Gallery and Art Now in Mandela Square. Collaborating with interior designers as well as private commissions her canvases are seamlessly cast to stand out in bold outline against bare surfaces. With a coveted Gold Loerie bagged at the last award ceremony for a campaign painting commissioned by Jupiter Drawing Room, we reckon Samantha Brown is a laudable insider’s investment.
