Art Exhibition: Fat Tuesday

Fat Tuesday Gallery in Kloof was named after the famous Mardi Gras (fat Tuesday in French) Carnivals which take place all over the world before the start of the period of Lent. The New Orleans Mardi Gras has become especially famous for its line-up of music, parades and food. In celebration of the gallery’s namesake, Fat Tuesday is holding a Mardi Gras festival of its own tomorrow night to open the latest exhibition, aptly named In Celebration. Fat Tuesday has become well-known for hosting exhibitions that are thought-provoking yet accessible, and this one promises to be no different, with 16 of the gallery’s regular artists submitting paintings, photographs, jewellery, drawing and other forms of design. Each artist has been given a space to fill with their interpretation of the theme and there are sure to be original, exciting creations from some of Durban’s best artistic talent. Tuesday night’s festivities will include live music by the South Jersey Pom Poms, a photo booth, jugglers and fire dancers. Bellevue Café, Fat Tuesday’s neighbour, will be serving traditional Cajun food such as Jumbalaya and Gumbo along with their regular acclaimed menu. If you would like to have dinner, booking is essential. Fat Tuesday is at the Bellevue Campus, 5 Bellevue Road, Kloof, 031-717-2785, fattuesday.co.za Text: Candice Botha
