Affordable Art Show

Durban’s artSpace Gallery is hosting its annual Affordable Art Show from 28 November until mid-January 2012. Now in its ninth year, the show displays a variety of artworks which are all on sale for less than R3 500. 'There will be paintings by over 100 different artists ranging from established names like Grace Kotze and Andrew Verster to people who have only been painting for a couple of years. For this reason the price and technical quality will range,' explains artSpace curator Karen Bradtke. There are more paintings than wall space for this exhibition, with some artists having submitted up to 10 paintings and for this reason, the Affordable Art Show will be constantly changing. 'Unlike a conventional exhibition, paintings purchased will be taken down immediately and replaced with something new. The surplus artworks will be stored upstairs in the studio upstairs which is a quiet place where visitors can look through the paintings unobserved. We find that people enjoy the sense of finding a hidden gem in there,' says Karen. There will be hidden gems indeed as the mix of old and new artists will remain the same, meaning that not all the Grace Kotze pieces, for instance, will be displayed at once. 'We want people to feel comfortable coming to this exhibition and hopefully they will walk away with something beautiful for their home,' Karen concludes. The Affordable Art Show opens on the evening of 28 November and runs until mid-January at 3 Millar Road, Durban. For more information call 031-312-0793 or visit artspace-durban.com Text: Candice Botha
