Many design-savvy South Africans are fans of Neville Trickett and his family. So it’s no surprise to discover that a space that has been imagined and put together by them is going to be beautiful, wild and filled with many artefacts you will want to take home. And that staying in it is a complete treat.
special details and eccentric touches
The cottage is just down the way from the Tricketts’ incredibly cool and eccentric family home. In his ‘love letter’ to guests, Neville invites you to swim in the dam when the weather is warm and the staff is so happy to show you around the greenhouse.
Handwritten technicalities and ‘need to knows’ are scribbled on a piece of paper and are written in a way that will make you feel at home almost immediately. A view of the valley on the one side, and a rolling lawn with a glimmer of the conservatory on the other, means starting your morning off with a long bath and one of the books from JD Salinger box set is easy. Deciding whether or not to explore the Midlands or laze on the wicker peacock listening to a South African penny whistle record is not such a simple decision…
The bedroom has lavish gold ottomans at the foot of the bed, but then so brilliantly, a simple and prosaic can of Peaceful Sleep and a box of Lion matches on the nightstand. The braai area is private, huddled alongside a blooming hydrangea and the Weber is, of course, pistachio green. Back inside, from the rafters, a taxidermy peacock watches over you as you play dominoes in front of the fire.
feeling at home
It’s a very special thing to spend a night or two in a place where you feel at home – although it’s in a space that is far better looking than the one in which I live. When I thank Neville for a wonderful stay and send compliments to the staff who are kind and so happy to help, he replies ‘They are family, kindred spirits.’ And that’s just how we felt upon leaving.
