Luxe Layover

The simple exterior of the luxurious 15 on Orange hotel, a noteworthy addition to Cape Town’s flourishing hospitality scene, belies its sparkly interior. The moment you set foot on the marble staircase with its red granite strip that wittily mimics a welcoming carpet, and are hypnotised by the three-storey Willowlamp chandelier suspended between floors, you’ll find yourself fighting the urge to do the royal wave – it’s hard not to feel like a VIP here. Developed by the Newcity Group in partnership with Protea Hotels’ luxury collection, African Pride Hotels, the hotel is built on the site of the former synod hall of the Dutch Reformed Church in Gardens. It feels much taller than its seven floors – as you enter the lobby, the interior opens up to reveal the building’s full height. The chic decor reflects the best of SA design – Haldane Martin’s classic Songololo couch curls around the entrance to the lifts, and an expanse of Volakas marble flooring stretches out before the hotel’s fine-dining restaurant, Savour, and the bistro-coffee shop, Cinnamon. The check-in desk is a design feature all of its own. Beneath a laquered black ceiling, a floating white glass desk sits in a black box against a black glass wall. To the left is a wall clad in an amazing three-dimensional sculpture made of Perspex Source Interior Brand Architects is the team behind the hotel’s dazzling design, described by creative project director Jeremy Stewart as ‘one of the most rewarding and challenging projects of my career’. The interiors (there are 129 suites as well as 12 luxury penthouse apartments) are characterised by ‘traditional elegance, maintaining a high level of luxury within a modern framework’. Graphic wallpaper was custom-made for each guest room, and muted tones of amber and taupe create warmth and a sense of welcome. Quirky touches suggest that the Source team had fun with this project: in the book-lined Judges Lounge – named for the hotel’s proximity to the city’s legal district – a pool table has been painted high-gloss white with a regal-purple baize. Attention to detail is evident throughout, from the Yemaya Spa with its incredible view of Table Mountain to the sumptuous Murano Bar (see page 91). 15 On Orange is all opulence but with a contemporary edge that puts it firmly in the realm of the hip hotel. 15 on Orange, corner Grey’s Pass and Orange Street, Gardens, CapeTown, 15onorange.com Source Interior Brand Architects, sourceiba.co.za African Pride Hotels, africanpridehotels.com
