Compiled by Naomi Larkin CAPE CADOGAN BOUTIQUE HOTEL WHERE: 5 Upper Union St, Gardens, Cape Town, 021-480-8080, WHY WE LOVE IT: A charming gem in the heart of the city, this historic homestead is a place you’re happy to return to at the end of a day spent exploring. Staff are genuinely welcoming and full of local knowledge that will enrich your visit. With interiors described as ‘combination bohemian chic with simple elegance’, they’re relaxed, but plush enough to feel special. The breakfast is worth getting out of your extremely comfy bed for. X-FACTOR: Located just off vibrant Kloof Street, you’re close to trendy stores, restaurants and bars. MORRELLS BOUTIQUE VENUE WHERE: Cnr Weltevreden Rd and Scott St, Northcliff, Johannesburg, 011-476-9495, WHY WE LOVE IT: It’s gracious and grand, and even a farmer’s daughter would feel like a duchess in this establishment. The rooms are spacious, the linens luxurious and within a few hours the staff will know all your preferences. Morrells has two accommodation areas, the Manor House and Farmhouse, as well as the Boutique Venue that caters for anything from a French Provençal-style wedding to a down-to-earth, farm-feel event. X-FACTOR: The garden is lush and manicured, and it’s a treat to enjoy breakfast or a G&T at sunset here with your on-site butler standing by, ready to provide five-star service. DENNEHOF KAROO GUEST HOUSE WHERE: 20 Christina de Wit St, off the R328, Prince Albert, 023-5411-227, WHY WE LOVE IT: Located in what is believed to be Prince Albert’s oldest homestead, Dennehof offers seven different rooms, all once outbuildings, repurposed into grand guest rooms. Each suite is individually styled with touches of Karoo character, and The Wagon Shed room and The Windmill Room include a spa bath and all the trimmings fit for a great honeymoon. X-FACTOR: Generous breakfasts are served on the deck with a view over the old Kweekvallei where the local dairy’s Guernsey cows graze in the distance. ANCHORS BOUTIQUE LODGE WHERE: 9 Reservoir Rise, Athlone Park, KwaZulu-Natal, 031-904-3533, WHY WE LOVE IT: The inviting suites at this guesthouse near Amanzimtoti are individually decorated with rich textures and sumptuous colour schemes. Bookings are for bed and breakfast, but you can opt for dinner at the private supper club, or make use of the braai area, too. Enjoy a game of pool or indulge in a round at the nearby golf course. X-FACTOR: Savour a cocktail, or three, at the lapa next to the pool – beautiful views of the Indian Ocean emphasise that holiday feeling.
