Kelly Withey's Paris Spots
Fashion entrepreneur Kelly Withey simply adores Paris – so much so that, before moving to Cape Town to open her high-end boutique Maison Mara, she lived and studied in the City of Light. 'My mother and Paris. These are the two things that shaped my aesthetic of the world,' she notes.
Here, she takes HL on a tour of her favourite spots in the French capital.
'I love this Italian restaurant - the Amalfi lemon pasta is to die for. The decor is polished, from the huge decanters hanging over the bar to the tree growing in the middle of the restaurant. Make sure to check out the very humorous WC doors.'
Chez Moi, Paris
'This is my favourite shop in Paris. The owner, Jean Baptiste, lives here 24/7 and you can take everything home with you, from his plates to his art! His selection is beautiful and quirky and the design of the store is contemporary yet very homely.'
Astier de Villatte
'You cannot go to Paris without stopping off for a visit at Astier de Villatte. Prepare to enter a world where imperfection becomes excellence. The ceramics and candles are all handmade in Paris. My favourite scent is Brasilia.'
L’eclaireur Saint Ouen
'The Saint Ouen flea market is a must-see: you can find furniture from around the world and all eras. One of my favorite places for getting inspiration is at Galerie L’eclaireur. The choice is modern and eclectic.'
'I have a flat in Paris but if I ever needed a hotel I would love to stay at the Montana in Saint Germain. Each room is like a different design playground inspired by the surrealists. If only you could try a new one out every night!'
Hotel Costes spa and swimming pool
'This is the perfect place to treat yourself to a beautiful treatment with the Costes beauty products and then spend the rest of the afternoon lounging by the pool. It's a haven in the centre of Paris.'
'The Palais Royal, with its Colonnes de Buren installation, is the perfect place to go have afternoon tea (at Café Kistune) after a bout of retail therapy at all the surrounding boutiques. Make sure to check out the life-size statue of Rick Owens in his flagship store.'
'Thaddaeus Ropac contemporary art gallery has hosted artists from the likes of Alex Katz, Joseph Beuys and Daniel Richter. It's located in the heart of the ever-hip Marais district, and the skylight in the main room complements the art perfectly.'
Fondation Louis Vuitton
'The Fondation Louis Vuitton designed by architect Frank Gehry is nothing short of a masterpiece. Every detail has been meticulously calculated and you could easily lose yourself in there for a whole day. It’s also where some of the Louis Vuitton by Nicolas Ghesquière shows take place.'
'It’s so much fun to have dinner here, then roll down the staircase and go dancing. Keep an eye out for the celebrity fresque by Jean Philippe Delhomme and the very cheeky carpet!'
'La Pagode is an old Parisian cinema built in the 1800s at the height of Japanophilia. It features art house movies in a beautiful ornate screening room and the cherry on the cake is the Japanese garden outside, the ideal place to have a drink and discuss your latest viewing.'
