The A-Z of Bedrooms

A is for Aesthetic

With a little imagination, a wallpaper panel becomes an eye-cathing focal point. This grown-up space is kept warm and inviting by a neutral, woolly throw - a counterpoint to the solid back and bookish backdrop, and an enticing invitation to settle in and relax... From top: Midas EnviroliteRevolution (4HEG) paint R389/5l, Midas Earthcote and Paint & Place; Libris Maximus wallpaper by Fornasetti for Cole & Son R7651/panel, St Leger & Viney; lamp by Laurie Wiid van Heerden R5400, Wiid Design; floating side table R2098 (excluding delivery), ODE; pillows in Linetta fabric in Charcoal and Granite both R420m, Hertex Fabrics; Raso 204 quilt R6272, Winter White and basket-weave throw R9843, both The Hall Collection; Broken Damask wool rug R29160, MP Rugs.

B is for Botanical

The study of plants and insects offers perennial inspiration for art and design - no less in the bedroom. Local fine art photographer Clinton Friedman brings nature's infinite mysteries indoors to create a restorative ambience. "I have a strong connection with plants, insects and wildlife and create bold, graphic designs that are full of intensity", he says. His cotton cushions, with names like Tree Top and Rhino Beetle, are available in Optical White, Natural or Seedcloth. From R695 each, Weylandts, Pierre Cronje, Africa Nova and Karrin Hatfield.

C is for Colour Burst

Introduce intense colour to uplift a smartly tailored space. For a rich yellow velvet, try The Silk & Cotton Co., and for a similar throw, source a damask from Tessa Sonik Fabrics. Recreate the organic feel of the headboard blocking with Earthcote's subtly reflective Limestone Paint that comes in hot, spicy colours like Motopasi Red and Crumbling Ant Hill. You'll need an undercoat of Earthcote Ultra-Fine Aggregate Primer tinted to the colour of the topcoat, followed by two coats of Limestone Paint applied in crisscross brush strokes.
