Suite Dreams

Elsa Young

Of the many changes that interior decorator Claire Frost and her husband Tim made to their 1940s home in Joburg, one of the most striking was the renovation of the master bedroom. Despite being north facing, this room, like most of the original house, lacked sufficient light. It was also on the small side, without room for any additional furniture. The solution was to raise the ceiling to a height of three metres, incorporate an extra sash window and paint the floors white, which all added to the new bright, airy feel. A new study for Tim was also built in to flow off the enlarged bedroom, with both rooms having a close connection to the garden and patio. 'The views are lovely and the sofa is a great place for a quiet read,' says Claire.
