Room Reno: Room #5 Loft
With the addition of a mezzanine floor and some smart storage, a poky flat in Cape Town’s CBD is now a chic city apartment.
When Shaun, Lauren and Craig Fitzgibbon decided to invest in property together in a heritage block in the middle of Cape Town, it was love at first sight for the potential it held. ‘Above the bathroom was a large space between the bathroom ceiling and the actual ceiling of the apartment,’ say the trio of siblings. ‘We saw an opportunity to create a mezzanine level.' The fact that it’s on the block’s light-filled top floor with views of Table Mountain sealed the deal.
The plan was to renovate the space to create a double-storey, loft-like, industrial-style apartment with exposed brickwork and a metal staircase. Three months later and the vision had come to life, with the input of architects Sean May and Jaco Jooste and many insightful ideas from Adam Voigt and Luke Croker of VC Project.

Do stick to your budget.
Don't forget to consider comfort. Someone is going to live in the space you are creating and it should make them happy.
