The winners are determined by reader votes, so make sure to vote for your favourite. The winners of the House and Leisure Before & After competition will receive a trip for two to Thailand for a 5-star break. Incredible prizes are up for grabs by 13 lucky readers, just by voting for their favourite reader's home or room renovation. Prizes include Caesarstone Surfaces to the value of R10 000, a Sophia chandelier from K Light worth R10 000, a two-night stay for four guests sharing at Abalone House's Pool Villas, in Paternoster on the West Coast, worth R12 000 and much more! You can only vote once, so be sure to choose wisely.

Room Reno: Room #3 Outdoor Living

A revitalised patio that blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor living transformed its owners’ enjoyment of their home in Bergvliet, Cape Town.

With an outside area originally separated from the main parts of their home in Bergvliet, Cape Town, Barbie Cook and her husband Mark Bell felt it was time to update their patio to create a unified flow between the interior and exterior so that they could make better use of both spaces. The reworked outdoor area – which was previously sparse and underused – now features low seating and a coffee table that the couple fashioned from recycled wood. Pergolas and a braai spot were added, the latter flanked on either side by vertical windows that were upcycled from a double door removed during their open-plan alterations. The windows now serve to illuminate the newly opened-up living/kitchen area, and create a visual connection from the patio to the kitchen.

Barbie and Mark's Top Renovation Tips

Do go for timeless finishes rather than trendy ones, and try a neutral palette with pops of colour to create unique rooms. Don't forget that open-plan living suits the South African climate and lifestyle best.
