Reader's Renovation: House #5
Previously an underwhelming house, this Green Point abode is now a sophisticated retreat that makes the most of limited space and opens up to superb sea vistas.
After a 20-year sojourn in Clifton, Capetonians Holger Schütt and Garth Singer knew it was time to move on. ‘We wanted a pet, and couldn’t keep one in our apartment,’ says Holger. So they bought an ‘ugly little house’ high up in Green Point, and proceeded to transform it into an airy, current home. Today they share this covetable double storey with the most important household members: their English bulldogs, 14-month-old Lilli and six-month-old Charlie.
Although the existing 1960s three-bedroom, three-bathroom facebrick structure was in desperate need of a facelift, Garth says what sold them was ‘the glorious sea view’. As the property had dark, tiny rooms with small windows, the main aim of the renovation was to reconfigure the interior to maximise the limited space without overcapitalising – and to invite in the amazing view. ‘We had a good idea of what we wanted to do, and then we briefed our architect who did the design work, while the plans were drawn up by a draughtsperson,’ says Holger, whose business Holger Schütt Interiors project-manages renovations of clients and own-spec houses and apartments.
Holger & Garth's Top 5 Renovation Tips
- Use a creative architect or draughtsperson, as their expertise can add enormous value.
- Ask to see the final plans in 3-D format so that you are able to visualise the end result before you begin.
- Have an all-inclusive budget to prevent being lumped with unplanned costs – then stick to it. Also, it's important to shop around, as prices vary widely.
- Use a reputable builder and contractors.
- You'll need nerves of steel because renovating is stressful – but it will be worth it in the end.
