The way that couple Sam and NJ Bouwer tackled the windows in their main bedroom during the extensive renovation of their Vredehoek home is proof that you can choose to see what you want to see.
The back of their house sits above the beginning of a highway so the busy road originally could be seen from the bedroom. As a a solution, NJ designed a steel frame for a long landscape-style window to capture the best part of the view: a slice of rooftops and then the distant sea and sky beyond.
‘Initially I didn’t understand the point of all the effort,’ admits Sam. ‘The first time I walked into that all white room, with this incredible slice of the view…I got it.’
