Creative Director Anita Bloom Shares Her Home Truths
With her experience curating events like Decorex and 100% Design, Anita Bloom is perfectly positioned to give her tips on how to bring an interior to life.
There are few South Africans with such a legacy of local design insight as Anita Bloom, the creative director for the Lifestyle, Design & Retail Portfolio at Reed Exhibitions — the group responsible for some of House and Leisure’s favourite design events like Decorex and 100% Design.
Bloom explains that being immersed in decor and design at the office gives her unique insights into what will work in different rooms and settings, and she feels that redecorating is a really wonderful way to freshen up any space. ‘The benefits of a small makeover or a complete redesign, like a kitchen revamp, is that you give your home new life and it adds to the happiness of making your home, home,’ she says. ‘Our home is the springboard to change – a place we can be ourselves.’
While she admits that it is difficult not to redecorate every year after seeing the latest trends first-hand in home decor at Decorex Durban, Decorex Cape Town and Decorex Joburg, Bloom says she just reminds herself why she fell in love with her home design in the first place. Although, she adds, if she were to start afresh, she would definitely go with the minimalist ‘mindful interiors’ look throughout, including more whites, soft greys and raw, wooden decor items.
Advising on redecorating, Bloom says it’s always important to stick to what you love and not just redecorate with the latest trends, which should be viewed as sources of inspiration rather than a blueprint for decorating. ‘Don't forget that what makes an interior unique is the personal touch you bring to it, so be inspired by the textures, colours and patterns you see, but decorate with objects that are valuable to you. Trust yourself because decorating your space with things you love is always on trend.’
You’ll be able to see some of Anita Bloom’s creative stylings at this year’s Decorex Joburg, taking place at Gallagher Convention Centre from 7-11 August. Centred on the show theme, ‘Designing for Africa - Feels Like Home’, Decorex Joburg will feature a number of curated installations, such as a Designer Spotlight with Donald Nxumalo Interiors.
Alongside that will be the exciting installations, including the Designer Pavilion; Kitchen Design Project by the Studio Collection; The Lighting Project by Streamlight; The Trend Kitchen with Slavin and Company; The Bathroom Project; Jacobs Gourmet Cooking Theatre; a Wine + Bubbly Bar furnished by Homewood; and a Fabric Trend Bar.
