IKEA’s Överallt Collection Wows the World

Having launched to general local acclaim at Design Indaba 2019, the Överallt designs – collaboratively created by 10 African designers with IKEA's in-house team – are generating global enthusiasm.

A storage basket embellished with braided detailing. The tactility of a cast-iron pot and skillet that fit together perfectly. Rugs, bags, cushions and quilts that take the notion of what African textile design is all about to the next level. And a cleverly customisable, easily disassembled yet sturdy plywood chair. These are just a few of the highlights of IKEA’s new Överallt collection, which launched at Design Indaba 2019 last month.

Two years in the making, the collection has been created by 10 African designers in collaboration with several members of IKEA’s in-house design team. The African contingent includes three South Africans: Laduma Ngxokolo of MaXhosa by Laduma, architect and designer Renee Rossouw and textile designer Sindiso Khumalo.

We think Ngxokolo’s graphic rugs will definitely be among South Africans’ picks of the most-wanted items in the collection, but House and Leisure editor Tiaan Nagel also loved Bethan Rayner and Naeem Biviji’s cast-iron casserole pot. Influenced ‘by the unique Kenyan style of dining outdoors’ it can be used for cooking and baking, and the lid also functions as a frying pan.

And, having long coveted one of Senegalese designer Bibi Seck’s chairs, we have our sights very firmly fixed on his brilliantly simple rocking chair and matching footstool.

Top online design publications ranging from Hypebeast to Designboom and Dezeen have been giving the Överallt collection loads of attention – and plenty of plaudits too. Dezeen’s readers are never shy about voicing their opinions, and even a number of these very frequently negative armchair critics are seriously impressed. Rather like several attendees at the launch, one of them simply declared ‘I want everything in this collection!’

Of course, IKEA does not have any stores in SA, so getting our hands on the very reasonably priced items in the Överallt collection isn’t particularly easy. (When we say reasonable, we mean it: prices start at just €5 [about R81] and top out at €69 [about R1 115] for the most expensive furniture items, including the covetable chairs, the round table and Rayner and Biviji’s seductively curved eucalyptus wood benches.) And while licensed local IKEA importers My Flat Pack do regularly bring shipments of IKEA items into the country, they are sadly unable to take on custom orders. The Överallt collection will be available internationally from IKEA in May 2019.
