Bike Couture: High Design for the Cape Town Cycle Tour 2019
These well-engineered and performance-driven bikes are a long-term investment for your cycling journey, starting off with this year's Cape Town Cycle Tour.
For nine days in March, the world-famous Cape Town Cycle Tour 'Lifecycle Week' celebrates all things cycling: bikes, gear, healthy living and the freedom of movement bicycles offer riders and athletes. Set in sunny Cape Town, a city renowned for its love of food, art, design and the outdoors, it's an annual highlight on the event calendar – and the perfect chance to appreciate well-engineered and finely blueprinted bikes.
With the eyes of the world on the cycling industry and its products, here's our roundup of three must-love racers that are as stylish as they are efficient.
1. Pinarello Dogma F10 and F10 X-Light
Used by winning teams in the 2018 Tour de France, the Pinarello Dogma F10 and F10 X-Light is a cut above the rest when it comes to speed and aerodynamics. With bars, stems and seat posts provided by Pinarello's MOST brand of products, the Dogma series is a first-class success for the Italian company.
Following a philosophy that strives for continual innovation, the team at Pinarello creates and defines new solutions to evolve and improve the brand's bicycles. For example, at the risk of being too heavy for uphill routes, a road bike cannot be solely aerodynamic. As a result, the ONDA fork is one of Pinarello's distinctive features. First used on the Dogma in 2000, today ONDA forks feature throughout the line. According to ASG Sport Solutions, benefits that ONDA provides are immediate. They include precision carving on turns with stability, reduction of longitudinal and lateral shock, 5% more rigidity and better overall comfort - ideal for long rides such as the Cape Town Cycle Tour.
Designed for competitive use, Dogma F10 X-Light is powered to be aerodynamic, without compromising ridability and precision – qualities that characterise every Pinarello bike. With every facet in mind, the matt black finishing ensures 100g weight reduction compared to standard painting. This is why all colours available on the F10 and F10 X-Light are based on matt black palette.
2. Colnago, Adidas Originals
Colnago, Adidas Originals and Trimm Star is a collaboration that celebrates three iconic products of the '80s. At the time, they were at the cutting edge of style and design, and they are still relevant and up-to-date today.
This collector's edition includes the launch of a Master Colnago frame (limited to only 105 pieces), with original serigraphs that pay tribute to the famous 'trefoil' logo by Adidas. The bicycle, simultaneously timeless and innovative, features cold-drawn stellar steel tubes and Colnago's well-known Precisa fork. This project also features the reworking of two types of Adidas shoes: Kamanda, a design experiment inspired by the football world of the '80s, and Trimm Star, released in 1985 as light training shoes.
Three exclusive versions of Colnago Master, Adidas Kamanda and Trimm Star, were born, destined to leave a mark in the imagination of fans.
3. Raleigh Grand Vitesse
Classic in appearance but modern in concept, the Raleigh Grand Vitesse is one of five bikes in the brand's Heritage line.
One of the world's oldest and best-known bike brands, the Raleigh Grand Vitesse features classic simplicity. It's an endurance road bike with compact gearing and short drop handlebars. The carbon fork increases comfort and performance, simultaneously helping to shed weight. The Shimano Ultegra drivetrain clicks through gears effortlessly, while the Clement Strada 28mm tyres are well equipped for road and gravel.
These bicycles are almost as cool as a 1950s time warp – except with decades-worth of well-refined power.
