The traditional chopping board is no longer banished to the kitchen and condemned to vegetable chopping; instead it has had a revolutionary makeover. Woodnewz recognised this trend and in 2011 started using the off-cuts of their bespoke furniture pieces to create chopping boards and platters. In a very short space of time the boards were competing with the furniture pieces in their Durban-based factory. ‘The boards are doing phenomenally well’ says Thinus Jonker, owner and lead designer. The clean lines and superior quality are backed by years of knowledge and the Woodnewz team aims to create truly beautiful boards, but with exceptional durability in mind. African Mahogany, Ash and Oak are some of the woods you can expect to see. The Woodnewz Workshop Blend is also available which is an eco-saving initiative created from the furniture off-cuts, so no two boards are the same. The Heart Board sells for R380 and makes the ideal Valentine’s gift. The Dutch Deli Board is suited to serving sandwiches and The Sunday Roast Board (R350) is masculine and perfect for the head of the home. Bespoke boards are available or you can visit the Woodnewz factory in Durban North. Visit the Woodnewz blog or online shop for options and details; alternatively contact Thinus on 082-579-6574.
