enjoy a fine day out at the winter sculpture fair
An annual favourite on Johannesburg's art calendar, the Winter Sculpture Fair returns to Nirox Foundation Sculpture Park on the weekend of 13 and 14 May. Following last year's international collaboration with Yorkshire Sculpture Park from the UK, this year's fair presents an exciting shift to an all-local focus. The 2017 exhibition, Open Laboratory, sees 12 dynamic curators, appointed by six of South Africa's top universities, appropriate the park. Together, they present a timely and thought-provoking collection of works by 50 alumni artists under the age of 35 who experienced their adulthood after the fall of apartheid. 'This is an incredible initiative, giving the next generation a large-scale platform,' says fair producer Nicole Siegenthaler. Artlogic has once again teamed up with Franschhoek Tourism to bring the best food and wine from the famed Cape valley to Gauteng. With more than 40 participating restaurants and wineries setting up shop alongside artisanal cheese, charcuterie and chocolate makers, visitors will be spoilt for choice. The featured chef at this year's event is Christiaan Campbell of Boschendal's The Werf restaurant, who's known for his holistic farm-to-table ethos. Enjoy a beautiful day out in the countryside on Saturday, 13 May or Sunday, 14 May, as you stroll around the park to discover the artworks or picnic among the sculptures with family and friends.
