Top 5 (Okay, 7) Macaroon Spots

These little sweet confectioneries are mouthwatering, we know. They've inspired countless visits to Ladurée in Paris, but we often neglect to notice the delicious macaroons available in our own backyard. Crispy shells, nutty centers and delicious fillings are all the makings of a perfect macaroon. Here, in no particular order, are a few spots you should visit in Cape Town... WHAT: Lady Macaron WHERE: Cnr Loop Street & Hans Strijdom Avenue, Cape Town, 082-560-6610 Lady Macaron offers some truly unique flavours with popular options like Birthday Cake garnering her a loyal following. Each month also brings with it a special flavour. April saw Hot Cross Bun-flavoured macaroons with a delicious cinnamon aroma. WHAT: Daniela’s Deliciously Decadent With at least twelve different flavoured macaroons in store at any given time, Daniela’s offers a wide variety of flavours and will package your sweet treats in a beautiful box if you buy three or more. A great gift to replace the predictable box of chocolates. WHERE: Shop 40, The Square, Cape Quarter, Green Point, 021-418-1920 WHAT: Cassis Patisserie WHERE: Shop 37a, Gardens Centre, Gardens, 021-461-6232 This is the first stop for any macaroon-loving Capetonian. Cassis specialises in traditional sweet flavours with delicate shells and the perfect creamy filling. Don't leave without buying a box of their chocolate caramel delights. WHAT: Limnos Bakers WHERE: 4 Somerset Road, Sovereign Quay Entrance B, Green Point, 021-425-1456 This European-style coffee shop offers a range of delicious treats, but we think you should head straight for their macaroons. Expect to find traditional flavours in beautiful pastel and bright hues. WHAT: Emporio Leone WHERE: Shop 6104, The Wharf Shopping Centre, V&A Waterfront, 021-421-8518 Enjoy the colourful display and indulge in traditional flavours like pistachio and strawberry. Other favourites include vanilla bean and coconut. They also provide beautiful gift packages. We know we're supposed to choose five, but we had to make mention of Myatt Café & Chocolatier too. Their blueberry, chocolate cherry and mocha macaroons are life-saving. You'll find them at Shop No. 6244, Upper Level, Victoria Wharf, V&A Waterfront. Okay, okay, we've added just one more. Ma Mere Maison (who you might have seen at one of our recent HL Night Markets) makes handmade confectionaries, that according to @bigbigjoe1 on Twitter makes other macaroons taste like Marie biscuits. Enough said. Visit Ma Mere at The Old Biscuit Mill, Unit C102, 375 Albert Road, Woodstock. Text Astrid Sanders
