Stack it up
Sometimes an idea is so brilliant yet so simple at the same time that you wonder how you didn't come up with it yourself. The Stacked storage system by Scandinavian design heavyweights Muuto is one of these. Conceptualised by Copenhagen-based architect Julien de Smedt in collaboration with the brand, the modular boxes act like building blocks that can be easily clipped together in any configuration to make whatever sort of storage unit or room divider you desire. 'How to be specific and generic altogether? Shelving systems have a tendency to achieve one concern but never both,' Julien is quoted as saying on Muuto's website. 'We decided to dimension shelving units based on the generic measurements of things to store and display while allowing for them to be combined according to specific needs and desires'. He came up with the idea while installing his own storage system at home using a mixed medley of shelves he had collected over the years from here and there - the concept of an amalgamation of modular boxes naturally grew from here. The modules come in three different sizes – small, medium and large – and are available with backings in various colours too, including ash, grey, white, pink, yellow and green, which just adds to their versatility. Clips are essential to ensuring that the whole set-up remains stable and the boxes stay aligned, and because they're available in different shades too, they become part of the design appeal. If you plan to set up all the crates on the floor in a bookshelf or TV unit-style configuration, you can buy a low podium to stand them on. Otherwise, thanks to backboards attached to the units, you can even opt to mount them on walls if that suits you better. What we're also very excited about is the Stacked Configurator functionality on Muuto's website that allows you to drag and drop virtual modules into a 'room' space so you can experiment with how you'd like to organise your boxes before you've even bought them. Although you can't make purchases through this system locally, it still helps you to plan before you buy.
