Academy award winning director and writer, Michel Gondry, is coming to Johannesburg. But, unlike most Hollywood directors, he’s not here to make a movie, he’s coming to encourage Johannesburgers to make thousands. French writer and director Michel Gondry, famed for his direction of ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’, ‘Be Kind, Rewind’ and, more recently, ‘The Green Hornet’, conceived the Home Movie Factory a few years ago. Now, after having shows in cities worldwide, the factory is being brought to Johannesburg by The Bioscope Independent Cinema as part of the France-South Africa Seasons. Inspired by his film ‘Be Kind, Rewind’, Michel Gondry devised the Home Movie Factory, an exhibition that invites the general public, at no charge, to star in and make their very own movies through a formula designed by Gondry himself. The exhibition takes place at MOAD in the Maboneng Precinct, and has been fitted with sets and backdrops that reflect a Johannesburg familiar to us all. The exhibition is being brought here in partnership with the National Film and Video foundation, The National Arts council and The French Institute. The exhibition is part of the French-South Africa seasons, an initiative that offers the people of France and South Africa an opportunity to understand each other through better cultural, scientific, education and business engagement. The Home Movie Factory exhibition is currently on and runs throughout September and October. Open daily from 9am to 6pm at MOAD, 281 Commissioner Street, Maboneng, Johannesburg.Booking to make your own film is essential and can be done via thebioscope.co.za. Alternatively you can go and view this incredible space and the filming in progress.
