10 trendy Superbalist picks
As the Style Director at one of South Africa’s most successful and forward-thinking online stores, Superbalist’s Tammy Tinker knows more than just a thing or two about what’s hot on the design scene.
To get some insight into 2016’s trends, we asked her to pick 10 looks and products from the e-platform that she believes will be super hot over the next year. Here’s her selection:
1. Pichulik Ndebele Bracelet: African Influences
As Tammy notes, the world has started to draw inspiration from African crafts in a bigger way than ever before, and this bold rope bracelet from Cape Town-based brand Pichulik is a perfect example. Rich with the colours and textures of the Ndebele culture, the piece of jewellery marries a traditional look with a brave contemporary aesthetic (price: R99).
2. Croquet Set: Past Revivals
Long considered the game of the posh elderly, croquet is, according to Tammy, making a major comeback as a cool summer to-do amongst the young and hip. This set from Superbalist includes mallets, balls, hoops and a centre peg (price: R399).
3. 2016 Star Wars Daily Planner: All Things Intergalactic
With all the buzz around the cinematic release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, motifs of the film series have made their way into everything from fashion to homeware, so it’s no major surprise that this Moleskin planner found itself on Tammy’s list. It even comes with limited edition stickers! (price: R259).
4. Lace-Up Dress: Boxy Shapes and Boho
This pick was chosen as a reflection of the trend Tammy has noted towards square, boxy shapes on the catwalks – she refers to this look as ‘beauty in a masculine form’. Plus, with the tie-up front, this dress also channels the 1970s trend that’s bound to be big in 2016 (read our Q&A about the ‘70s look) (price: R449).
5. Crystal Stick Ear Cuff: Embellishment
According to Tammy, the trend towards heavy embellishment and costume jewellery that we’re seeing on the streets is starting to reflect on the catwalk too, and this matching stud and ear cuff set is an affordable way to achieve this flashy look (price: R249).
6. Adele’s 25 Vinyl Album: Records and Idols
Combine vinyl, which has been hot for some time and is only getting more popular, with icon Adele’s latest tracks and you have a music offering that’s as trendy as it gets. Tammy’s certain that this album will be enjoyed over and over again for a long time to come (price: R449).
7. Speaker Cooler Bag: 90s Street Culture
It seems the old classic Boombox and other emblems of the ‘90s are making a bit of a comeback, with this impossible cool cooler bag a prime example. Not only does it keep food cold, but it actually functions as a music box thanks to a built-in amplifier and speakers that connect to your iPhone or iPod (price: R549).
8. Superstar Sneakers: Unisex Street Cool
Tammy asserts that what she refers to as the ‘off-duty model’ look is big right now, even on the catwalks, and these Adidas 70s sneakers encapsulate this style. The all-white shoes are stylishly androgynous and so give ‘sexy’ a slightly masculine edge (price: R999).
9. The LBD: A Timeless Trend
As Tammy says, a beautiful little black dress is a trend that never goes out of style (as paradoxical as that might sound). All designers produce one every season, and this ribbed, high-neck bodycon mini is the buy she suggests for the coming year (price: R499)
10. Striped Breton Tee: Everyday French Elegance
Once the uniform for French navy seaman, the navy and white Breton shirt has since become and iconic look, with Jean Paul Gaultier being a proud ambassador of this fashion piece. In 2016, it’s still set to be a hot style, and this tee from Glamorous gives it a little twist with fold-over cuffs and a 70s tie-up front (price: R349).
