When it comes to goosedown duvets, high quality linens and soft cotton robes, Granny Goose reigns supreme. And it’s all thanks to its founder, Gaynor Walkey, whose impeccable taste, attention to detail and appreciation for the finer things in life underpin the family-run company’s aesthetic.
It all began 20 years ago, when Gaynor recognised the need for an alternative to the microfibre and synthetic pillows that were popular at the time. So she put an advert in the local newspaper offering people the opportunity to visit her home in Constantia to have their pillows filled to their specific needs. ‘Customers would lie on my lounge carpet trying out different pillow inners, adding and removing handfuls of feathers until they found the one that suited them best,’ she laughs.
Since then, Granny Goose has evolved into a fully-fledged business that Gaynor runs with three of her four children Lisa, Glen and Gaby. ‘Lisa handles the e-commerce side of things, Glen heads up the factory and is in charge of the commercial aspect, and Gaby deals with the company’s finances,’ says Gaynor. ‘We get on so well because we all have a role in the business that plays to our strengths.’
Granny Goose now boasts eight stores in South Africa and an online shop, all of which stock soft, sumptuous buys that will make a high-end addition to any home. ‘I’m not going to tell you that a family-run business delivers better service or goods’, says Gaynor, ‘but what I can tell you is that whatever Granny Goose product you choose, it was made with a lot of love.’
