If you've ever had any doubt that South Africa has the power to be a real international trend-setter, surely the fact that WGSN, the global trend authority for fashion and the creative industries, has just opened its Africa head office in Cape Town will convince you.

WGSN2 Hannari Slabbert, the WGSN Regional Director for Africa, sits at a table in the new office at Cape Town's Ideas Cartel.

Though the trend forecaster has been operational on the continent for some time already, the launch of an office in the Mother City reflects its recognition that there's enough exciting innovation happening here to warrant a physical presence.

'Africa is a hub of creativity and full of growth,' says Jose Papa, the CEO of WGSN. 'The investment in our first office in Africa signals our belief, as the world's leading trend forecaster, that Africa will play a bigger part in the future globally.'

WGSN3 Hannari looks out at the urban view from the new office space.

We've already seen many local designers and artists receiving acknowledgement on the world stage of late, so hopefully this marks the start of a new age where instead of following global movements, international trends are actually originating on home soil.

The office is based at Inner City Ideas Cartel, one of Cape Town's hippest working spaces, and we can't think of a more appropriate place for a company that's all about being one step ahead of the rest.
