It seems hot pink and tropical fronds are on the minds of many in the décor and design world right now. The retro Miami look is a trend that originated in Miami and Palm Springs back in the 70s, and it’s made quite a comeback of late – seriously hip hotspots like Hallelujah in Cape Town, Makaron Restaurant in Stellenbosch and the new Tashas in Nelson Mandela Square all channel aspects of this aesthetic. Although the movement has evolved over time, its distinctive features remain the same: vibrant colour blocks in aqua, salmon, emerald, coral and chartreuse; exotic motifs of flamingos, palm trees, pineapples and more; flashy accents of brass and gold; and the use of mid-century modern furniture and Art Deco details. If it’s something you might be considering for your own space, draw some inspiration from the dedicated retro Miami Pinterest board we put together.
