Q&A: U&G

HL asked Zainub Dawood, textile coordinator at U&G Fabrics, for some inside information on current fabric trends. Which fabric styles are currently on trend? Bold prints and eye-catching geometrics in fresh colours are all the rage at the moment. They are huge in terms of what’s trending and are selling very well. Can you tell us what shoppers can look forward to going into summer? With summer on our doorstep we can be sure to see lots of bold prints and jacquards in bold scale as well as intense colour with flower patterns, bird motifs and coordinating geometrics. These can be used with textured linens and cottons in almost any room. Do you think people are becoming more adventurous when it comes to shopping for fabrics? People have definitely become more adventurous and don’t shy away from strong colours. We’re also seeing people taking advantage of the chance to be brave when it comes to different patterns and designs. Do you think South Africa is on an international level when it comes to fabrics? Absolutely! The best part of my job is regularly visiting international exhibitions and bringing home the latest trends and designs. Is U&G launching any new fabrics in time for summer? We have just launched three new collections in time for summer, each different in character. Belle de Jour is a collection of French-inspired cotton linen prints with pretty pastels, where as the colours and designs found in the Floral Affection collection are more fun and bold. The Hacienda range is a beautiful upholstery print collection. Visit ugfabrics.co.za for more information. Compiled by Katharyn Williams-Jaftha
