Q&A: Kirsten Beets

Kirsten Beets' intricate drawings and paintings caught our attention... Tell us a bit about yourself. I'm from Cape Town. I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Stellenbosch University in 2005 and subsequently went on to study 3D animation at The Animation School. I worked as a texture artist for a post-production company in Cape Town before pursuing further postgraduate education at Stellenbosch University where I gained a BPhil in illustration in 2012. I also completed a residency at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice that same year. I have participated in several group exhibitions around South Africa and I currently live and work in Cape Town. What is your main medium? Paint on paper. Where do you draw inspiration for your subject matter? I draw inspiration from things around me. I collect random objects that have taken my fancy for whatever reason, which usually end up in my paintings. Some of my inspiration comes from nature and human interaction. I quite like thinking of odd pairings, like a tiger in a greenhouse, or a hyena on my desk. Describe your art in three words. Detailed, delicate and thoughtful. Do you have any plans for the rest of the year? I have my first solo show at Salon91 in Cape Town in November 2014, otherwise I'm working on projects for my illustration company Run Rabbit Run.
