Started by Nicolette van der Westhuizen, Mossie Crafts came about after she took a trip to Canada and discovered quilting. ‘Quilting is huge over there and I brought home so many beautiful fabrics,’ she says. ‘But I'm not very adept at sewing, so I had to find another way of creating something beautiful, yet functional.’ Combining the concept of quilting with her love of rustic enamel and its inherent nostalgia, Nicolette began making fabric-covered mugs and, later, bowls. ‘The mugs and bowls are each covered in high-quality quilting fabric and coated with a deco resin that serves as a protective finish, making all the items durable and easy to clean,’ she explains. As each fabric Nicolette gets in is limited in terms of stock, her designs are barely replicated. She is also busy with saucers made from re-purposed candleholders. The mugs retail at R40 (9cm) and R30 (6cm). The bowls retail at R50 (16cm) and a mug and saucer set retails at R80.
