Here at House and Leisure we like to ensure that we’re familiar with well made, and exquisite objects. That’s why each issue is packed with not only the decor and lifestyle things that we love, but those coveted by South African taste makers and trendsetters. Another company that’s no stranger to finely crafted items, Design Indaba has launched its annual Most Beautiful Object in South Africa (MBOISA) competition. This year’s iteration fetaures 12 experts in the fields of fashion, design and culture, who each select what they believe to be the, you guessed it, most beautiful object in South Africa. The chosen 12 include TV and radio personality Bonang Matheba, Marie Claire editor Aspasia Karras, marketing and communications manager (and Twitter opinionist) Khaya Dlanga and Alistair King, whose house we were excited to have the opportunity to peek into in October 2013. Each person on the panel was asked to nominate what they consider to be an item of beauty, not just in a purely aesthetic sense but for its social implications, be they economical, sustainable or functional. Now it’s up to design aficoinados to select a winner from the 12 finalists. During the Design Indaba expo, held from 28 February–2 March 2014, each of the pieces will be put on display and voting lines will open for the public to select the object in South Africa that reigns supreme.
