Masego Maponyane

We chatted to Joburg-based creative and HL Rising Star, Masego Maponyane about his exciting new menswear range: OCD for Augustine by Maps Maponyane. What inspired you to start your own menswear label? Clothing is something that I've always been interested in, especially suits, so when the opportunity presented itself I couldn't let it pass me by. I've always wanted to share a few of my ideas and despite not coming from a formal fashion design background, I've always felt as though I've understood and known what I've wanted from a suit. What is the best thing about an OCD suit? The best thing about an OCD suit is the quality, fit and attention to detail. Are there any local or international designers or styles that have influenced your designs? I think I'm influenced by designers such as Tom Ford and Paul Smith, as well as the style associated with Tiger of Sweden. What makes the OCD collection a proudly South African label? It's all produced locally, right down to the pride of the tags, which read 'Hand Made in Joburg'. So there is a serious emphasis on placing the origins at the forefront. What can we expect to see from OCD at Augustine this season? The Augustine brand itself will be creating some cool, fresh and edgy biker style garments. OCD on the other hand is still going to continue to push the current collection with one or two everyday pieces being added to it. However, a completely new collection is not something I plan on rushing at all. It may be a while… How can readers order or buy a bespoke OCD suit? If readers are in Johannesburg, they can visit the Augustine Studios in Parkhurst on 87 6th Street to get measured up by one of our tailors. Otherwise they can visit and send through their measurements to be taken by a preferred tailor of their own if they’re not in the Johannesburg region. Interviewed by Lindi Brownell Meiring
