Item of the day: miniature Armadillo shoe

Okay, it's not exactly a shoe that everyone can wear, except perhaps for fashion iconoclast Daphne Guiness. There are only 21 pairs in existence, and they retail for $10,000. But as an ornament, the Armadillo Shoe in miniature by Alexander McQueen makes a strong, albeit fetishistic statement. It's available at the store of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for $25. The landmark exhibition "Savage Beauty" is a homage to the late Alexander McQueen. A comprehensive retrospective of the inherent romanticism in the designer's work, it is dark and melancholic at times, gothic and macabre at others, yet ethereal, triumphant, hopeful and heart-wrenchingly sublime nonetheless. Beautifully curated and dramatically lit, this is one exhibition that's well worth the hour-long queue, for it leaves you stunned and speechless at the sheer talent of the man, who truly was not of this world. If you're in the Big Apple, Savage Beauty is underway at the Metropolitan Museum of Art until Sunday, 7 August.   Text: Bambina Olivares Wise Images: Metropolitan Museum
