Item of the day: Lemur purse by Madwa

The Lemur Purse from Madwa proves that ethnic doesn't always have to mean trite and tacky. The purse is made from sustainable materials, woven according to traditions passed on from generation to generation, but in colours and patterns that give it a contemporary feel. They're produced in combinations of black and natural, yellow and black, as well as dark brown and natural.The Madwa label is dedicated to contemporary crafts and works with artisans in Madagascar and Swaziland to produce eco-friendly items, including bags, hats, baskets, palm stools, floor cushions and raw silk textiles. The purses come in three sizes; each one can easily hold a cell phone, keys, a small wallet and a lipstick. Prices start at R100 at Abby & Ross in Parkwood.
