Fran Jex’s striking enlarged photographs are the result of a life-long fascination with nature. ‘I grew up on a farm,’ explains Fran, ‘and so have always found inspiration in the landscape around me.’ Fran’s Erythrina photographs are exceptionally vivid and create a sense of drama in a space whilst her popular Cape Aloe shots are much more subdued in their colour scheme yet equally noteworthy. Jex’s range also features amaryllis, protea and thorn trees but her subjects are not only from the floral kingdom – her Nguni cow pieces are in high demand as well. She also creates fascinating mixed media pieces from objects found on walks on the beach, which are obviously one of a kind. ‘I find God in nature,’ she says and the detail of creation is certainly captured in her artworks. Fran’s canvases are for sale on her website and from Abundance, the décor store she runs with Sue Boulle in Umhlali near Ballito. The talented duo has created a collection of décor, furniture, jewellery, gifts and novelties which they are passionate about. Each item in the store is hand-picked and many are hand-made resulting in an unusual assortment of fascinating things, which Fran and Sue delight in telling customers about. Prices vary from R760 – R3 500 depending on the size of the canvas required. See more of Fran Jex’s work at franjexart.com or at Abundance, Karibu Farms, Umhlali, Kwa Zulu Natal.
