Installing a floating shelf


Floating shelves are becoming increasingly popular as people favour clean lines and a contemporary look and feel in their homes. House and Leisure asked owner/ designer of ODE, Jan du Toit, for some tips on how to install your own floating shelf with ease... Ideal surface to fix to:

  • Plastered brick, cement brick and cement block wall
  • Skimmed brick, cement brick and cement block wall
  • Timber wall
  • Bagged brick wall (if fixed onto a flat, even surface)
  • Not suitable for old soft clay bricks

Installation is as easy as 1,2,3,4 (see images in the gallery above):

  • Drill holes
  • Bolt bracket to wall
  • Adjust level
  • Fit shelf

In your package, you will get:

  • Pre-assembled, ready to install shelves
  • Metal bracket
  • Timber shell
  • Plastic wall plugs with bolts and washers
  • Installation guideline

In addition to these items, you will need:

  • Hammer drill with 10mm masonry bit
  • Spirit level
  • Shifting spanner or 13mm spanner
  • Someone to help you
