Instagram's New Look

Heraclitus famously said, 'the only thing constant in life is change', and change is precisely what photo- and video-sharing app Instagram gave us yesterday with the launch of its redesigned icon and app. The new logo draws on the look of the old one, but is decidedly different, with a simpler camera motif and a rainbow gradient in the background. Similarly, the in-app design has been stripped down to feature straightforward black-and-white icons, apparently in an attempt to make sure nothing takes away from the main content of Instagram: the photos and videos. Love or hate the revamped look (and there are certainly large schools on both sides), you have to admit, it was inevitable – the brand has evolved so much since it was first born back in 2010, so it makes sense that they'd want to reflect this with a more contemporary look. According to the Instagram Blog, the revamped logo was inspired by the global community of Igers. 'Our updated look reflects how vibrant and diverse your storytelling has become,' they've said. The change has in turn inspired Instagram users, many of whom have taken it upon themselves to create their own interpretations of the redesign in the most imaginative of ways using the hashtag #myinstagramlogo (this remix project was actually started years ago by Paulo del Valle, but has been reignited since the change). As lovers of all things art- and design-related, we're intrigued by the simplified transformation of the brand's icon, but we have to say, we're even more excited about the artistic renditions that have come out of it. Hoje é um dia muito importante para o @instagram, com a chegada do novo logo/ícone e novo layout do aplicativo. Eu estou extremamente honrado de participar desta mudança e de ter sido uma das pouquíssimas pessoas do mundo a vê-lo antes do anúncio oficial. Fui convidado por eles para recriar o novo logo, assim como fiz há cerca de 3 anos quando criei a hashtag #MyInstagramLogo. Nesse período, mais de 4.000 pesoas criaram suas próprias versões do logo anterior, de todas as formas possíveis. Essa mudança representa um novo começo para eles, por isso é um momento tão importante. Convido a todos que já participaram do #MyInstagramLogo a participarem novamente! ? Today is a very important day for @instagram, with the announcement of their new logo/icon and a brand new layout. I'm extremely honored for being part of this change and for being one of the very few people in the world to see it before the launch. I was invited by them to recreate their new logo, just like I did it before about 3 years ago when I created the #MyInstagramLogo hashtag. During this period, over 4.000 people have created their own version of the previous logo, in many different ways. This change represents a new fresh start for them, so that's why it's such an important moment. I invite you all that have been part of #MyInstagramLogo before to create your new version! ?
