Piece Industries is a very hip and cool design studio that combines freestyle sports with creative expression. Merging art, design, film and photography, they create a proudly South African product unlike any other – custom designed skim boards. Based in Cape Town, Piece Industries was started in 2011 by Caileigh Pentz, Richard Pentz and Magdalini Giannakaki. ‘Our objective is to create proudly South African products that collaboratively integrate different industries and build communities’, co-founder Caileigh told HL. The products are hand-crafted and undergo a print, press, and shape manufacturing process. ‘We collaborate with local illustrators and board riders to give the freshest finish to our deck artworks and board performance,’ she says. The skim boards were first designed for the simple reason that high quality skim boards for beginners were not available in South Africa at an affordable price. On top of wanting to make a practical product, they wanted it to be cool and edgy, and so paired up with local illustrators. The result is a range of beautiful deck artworks. ‘The idea is to use the deck space as a platform to expose local illustrators and start a new conversation between outdoor enthusiasts and the art world. Essentially, this is art you can play with’, says Caileigh. Featured industrial designers include Daniel Leggat, Ryan Streak, Charl Vester, and Caileigh herself. Contributing artists include the talents of Kronk, Landon, Sharon B. Designs, D.D Wolff and Colin Tomas. The boards currently retail from R1 350 to R1 500 depending on which board and collection you choose. To purchase the boards online visit their website directly at pieceindustries.co.za.
