Light, bright and transparent, with sweeping views towards the city and Table Mountain, the South African Rugby Union’s (SARU) new headquarters in Plattekloof’s Tygerberg Business Park manages to convey the history and legacy of the sport in a manner that is fresh, contemporary and thoroughly on-trend. The work of interior and architectural design firm Collaboration, the offices are set over three levels with a generous reception area, private meeting rooms, management offices, open-plan desking, and a staff canteen decked out in Astroturf. A spiral staircase enclosed with curved glass balustrades forms a focal point in the public spaces and connects the office floors. New bulkheads were added to the double-volume entrance area to create a sense of place and arrival. Naturally, the sporting theme is conveyed throughout the space, from the use of the Springboks’ green and gold, countered with contrasting accent colours, to the considered displays of trophies and photographs. And if you’re in any doubt as to the nature of the business here, a glance at any of the televisions on the various floors, showing matches and replays, will reveal all.
