Hello Nünü Knits

When Hello Nünü owner Françoise Brand fell pregnant in 2009, she began knitting for her new baby girl. Three years on and Françoise, a property manager, has turned her one-time knitting hobby into the thriving business it is today. What began as a one-women-show, Hello Nünü now employes a team of crafty ladies. While Françoise's very first orders were for a sailor outfit and bear ear hoodie – still the most popular items in the Hello Nünü range today – she now offers a broad range of products, including beanies, booties, bibs, leg warmers, scarves and cotton vests. Larger items like play mats, cot blankets, bed throws, cushion covers and hot water bottle covers are also on offer. The product range is primarily targeted at babies and toddlers – from newborn to four years – but this hasn't stopped students and adults from coveting her knitted wares. 'I started selling at a few markets this year, and I was quite surprised at the number of adult orders I got!' says Françoise. 'There were hipsters in their twenties placing orders for owl/bunny beanies, moms ordering beanies and leg warmers for themselves and their teenagers, and quite a few dads who bought "father and son" matching dinosaur beanies!  We are definitely not closed to taking orders for older children and adults.' With this in mind Françoise is expanding the Hello Nünü range to include adult knitwear in time for autumn next year. Hello Nünü items are made in either cotton, bamboo or quality acrylic yarns, depending on the product. These yarns, Françoise says, are soft to the touch and durable for toddlers. 'Whether your child is new to the world, or celebrating their second birthday, their skins are soft and sensitive,' she continues. 'Handmade knitted clothing is gentle on the skin and also allows the little ones to move freely, while keeping snug.' Until the adult range is released, adults can experience the same cosy softness as their little ones with one of Hello Nünü's knitted throws, sparked by a custom order for a wedding. 'We recently made the most beautiful bed throw as a wedding gift for someone who lives in Italy,' says Françoise. 'Since then, we have had several orders for these throws, in all different sizes from single beds (for teens and toddlers) to queen and king sizes.' Hello Nünü is currently available online from Utique or from a 'Trunk Show' - a collaboration between Hello Nünü and Mr and Ms clothing. Trunk Shows occur once every two months in different locations around Cape Town. For more information about Hello Nünü visit, or alternatively check out the Trunk Show's Facebook page at
